Brief Course Description

The course offers critical evaluation of the nature of ethnographic research. Research design includes the rethinking of site, voice, and ethnographic authority. Annother primary goal of the class is to prepare graduate students in anthropology for pre-doctoral fieldwork.

Extended Course Description

This course covers the design and implementation of a successful ethnographic field project. It is intended for graduate students in anthropology who have not yet begun their dissertation research. We will cover such topics as research design; grant writing; field methods and ethics; and, ethnographic voice and authority. We will also cover a range of practical field skills including:

Note: This course does not have a practicum/field component, students wishing hands-on fieldwork experience are encouraged to take Professor Sherman's Sociology 509a: Advanced Methods of Ethnographic Field Research. This course and Sociology 509a are designed to complement each other.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to take Prof Dudley's Anthro 452: Ethnographic Fieldwork – Analysis and Practice (this Spring: W 1.30-3.20 WLH 011), which is designed specifically for the undergraduate curriculum.


Prerequisites and Requirements

Enrollment limit: 15.
Prerequisites: None (permission of instructor).

Graduate students from related humanistic and social science disciplines are welcome, however enrollment priority is given to doctoral students in anthropology. Students attending the first day of class will also have priority over those trying to add the course later on.


Textbooks and Course Readings

The required textbooks will be available at the Labrynth bookstore. The syllabi and course readings in the forms of articles will be distributed in class and also available through the ClassesV2 server.
